Gamboa - Once bitten, twice . . . by Marvin Terry

Baseball Almanac is pleased and honored to present a series of original baseball related cartoons by artist Marvin Terry. Each one of his magnificent drawings takes a unique look at our national pastime — a game we love, a game we sometimes do not love...

"I don't know what we can do to eliminate this. I'm grateful (the Royals) got there as quick as they could, especially when there was a knife involved. God forbid me or somebody else would get stabbed. That could have been really tragic." - Kansas City Royals first base coach Tom Gamboa

The print is in response to the attack on Coach Tom Gamboa which took place on September 20, 2002. The Kansas City Royals first base coach, who was looking towards home plate at the time, was attacked from behind by a bare-chested father (William Ligue, Jr) and his teenage son who claimed Gamboa exchanged words with them and, "got what he deserved."

Did you know that on September 28, 1995, Chicago Cubs relief pitcher Randy Myers was also attacked by a fan who jumped from the stands? Myers saw his attacker (a 27-year-old bond trader) coming and dropped his glove then "laid him out" with a forearm hit to the assailants head.
