Barry Bonds and the Rally Monkey by Marvin Terry

Baseball Almanac is pleased and honored to present a series of original baseball related cartoons by artist Marvin Terry. Each one of his magnificent drawings takes a unique look at our national pastime — a game we love, a game we sometimes do not love...

"Yeah, sometimes I surprise even myself. But now everybody is copying me. It's like when The Chicken started. Pretty soon everyone had their own mascot. Same here. I hear every team is getting a rally animal, and it really ticks me off." - The Rally Monkey "Interview" with Jim Caple of ESPN

Doug Mientkiewicz once commented, "The Rally Monkey's awesome. The Homer Hankie ain't going to do anything on its own. You can't just set it down and have it jump around. The Rally Monkey, that thing's awesome."

How did it all start? Here is what the St. Petersburg Times wrote on October 11, 2002, "The monkey business started in June 2000, when two guys in the Edison Field crew tried to find a way to get the crowd fired up. They found some footage from the movie Ace Ventura, Pet Detective of a monkey jumping in place and, for reasons not quite clear, flashed the phrase RALLY MONKEY."
