1965 All-Star Game

The American League was once again at a disadvantage as the National League assembled one of the most amazing batting line-ups ever to share an All-Star roster.

It included such legends as Willie Mays, Hank Aaron, Willie Stargell, Richie Allen, Joe Torre, Ernie Banks, Pete Rose, Maury Wills, Roberto Clemente and Frank Robinson. Still, the '65 game was close and tied 5-5 in the seventh. Then Sam McDowell walked Mays who went to third on Aaron's single and scored on Ron Santo's infield single. The win gave the National League the lead in the series for the first time (18-17-1).

"It doesn't matter what he (Juan Marichal) throws; when he's got it, he beats you." - Roberto Clemente

Fans will long recall the tense moments where Bob Gibson struck out Harmon Killebrew and Joe Pepitone in the ninth inning with a tying run on second base.

The Midsummer Classic started play in 1933. With this victory, the National League took the lead in wins 18-17 for the first time in All-Star history.

Willie Mays led off the 1965 All-Star Game with a four-hundred fifteen feet home run, was walked twice, then scored the winning run during the seventh inning.
