Autograph Of The Week: Willie McCovey

On June 30, 1978, Willie McCovey and Jamie Easterly became forever related when McCovey slammed an Easterly pitch over the wall at Atlanta Fulton County Stadium to become the 12th player in major league history to hit five-hundred home runs.

Stretch was a magnificent player who earned his nickname by being able to reach for mis-thrown balls off the first base bag further than anyone else and Baseball Almanac is pleased to honor him with our autograph of the week selection.

"He (Willie McCovey) did it all despite arthritic knees, a troublesome hip, aching feet, and assorted other ailments. He did it in the Candlestick Park cold and despite more intentional walks than any player of he era." - Nick Peters in the Oakland Tribune (1986)

The Sporting News recently put together a list of the 25 Greatest Moments in baseball history and at number thirteen they put 'McCovey Lines Out' - in reference to the ninth inning, game 7, 1962 World Series liner that ended the game. Lon Simmons, the Giants broadcaster, called the moment with, "Ralph Terry gets set. Here's the pitch to Willie. Here's a liner straight to Richardson! The ballgame is over, and the World Series is over . . . Willie McCovey hit it like a bullet. A line drive straight to Bobby Richardson. Had that ball got out of his reach, the Giants would have been the winner. Now it's the Yankees. The final score of the ballgame: The Yankees win it 1-0."
