Catfish Hunter Award

The Catfish Hunter Award is presented annually to the Oakland Athletics' player whose play on the field and conduct in the clubhouse best exemplifies the courageous, competitive and inspirational spirit demonstrated by the late Hall of Fame pitcher, Jim "Catfish" Hunter.

"I'm honored to receive this award, especially since it was voted upon by my teammates and the coaching staff. Buddy Bell, one of the finest people I've ever met, once told me that 'the greatest thing you can do in this game is be a good teammate.' I had a lot of injury problems this year, but I always tried to keep that in mind. You may have statistics on the back of your baseball card, but when you try to be a good teammate, that's from the heart and will last forever." - Mike Sweeeney on MLB.com (09/15/2008, Press Release)

Catfish Hunter Award

Catfish Hunter holds the Oakland Athletics team record for wins (131) and is the only A's pitcher to have five consecutive 20-Wins Seasons (1971-1975).

The 2008 receipient, Mike Sweeney, was quoted at the top of this page and his words alone were near proof what a perfect receipient of the Catfish Hunter Award he was.
