Good Guy Award

Members of the Cleveland chapter of the Baseball Writers Association of America vote annually for Good Guy Award receipient. The award, which is called in full the Frank Gibbons-Steve Olin Good Guy Award, was named in honor of former Cleveland Press sportswriter Frank Gibbons and pitcher Steve Olin, both of whom had the "good guy" qualities the writers vote for each year - a player or member of the Indians staff who is the most cooperative and exhibits professional behavior through the season.

"'I checked with the Brewers for the height and weight of our new guys (Jamie Easterly & Gorman Thomas). As soon as I picked out uniforms that I thought would fit, I sent them home to my wife, Mary. She stitched the players' names and numbers on the shirts in a couple of hours." - Clubhouse Manager Cy Buynak (New York Times, Thomas Rogers, 10/10/2007)

Only two people have won the Good Guy Award more than once, Clubhouse Manager Cy Buynak (1977 & 1993) and designated hitter Andre Thornton.

In 1971 Hank Peters won the award serving in capacity as the Vice President / Player Personnel for the Cleveland Indians and in 1975 Peters became the sixth president of the National Association of Professional Baseball Leagues.

Do you agree with the choices made by the Cleveland Chapter of the Baseball Writers? What other Indians players do you think could or should have won the Good Guy Award? Share the answers to these questions on Baseball Fever.
