Home Run First Pitch Ever Game by Esteban Yan Box Score

Interleague play is partly responsible for this famous feat (hitting a home run off the first pitch ever seen) as Esteban Yan is joining the club as an American League pitcher, the first to do so since the designated hitter started.

In the second inning, with one man on base and two outs, Yan hit the first pitch he ever saw for a historic home run. Baseball Almanac is pleased to present this memorable home run moment.

"Professionally, I never had a chance to hit a home run. I can hit" - Esteban Yan

The last American League pitcher to hit a home run in his first at-bat was Don Rose on May 24, 1972, one year before the designated hitter came into play.

Larry Rothschild, the manager of the Devil Rays, said after the game, "Some guys you throw to, you know they don't have a chance. I would take bunts and broken-bat singles, but he has a good swing."

Did you know that he single hit by Fred McGriff during the eighth inning was the two-thousandth of his career?
