"John Ward excelled as both a star pitcher and top-flight shortstop during his 17-year major league career." - National Baseball Hall of Fame (website)

John Ward Perfect Game Box Score

Did you know that John Ward was not going to be relieved by his bullpen regardless of how good or bad he pitched on this particular date (or season for that matter)? Why not? Because he was the ONLY pitcher on the entire team all season long.

Nine players from the Providence Grays appeared in the box score. Two players (Mike McGeary & Sadie Houck) did not make it into the game and they were the only other two players on the 1880 Providence Grays roster.

The home team on June 17, 1880 was determined not by the location of the game itself, but rather by the toss of coin prior to the game — a common practice at the time.
