The 500 Home Runs Club

This is a unique and interesting book. Bob Allen is a veteran publicist and agent who worked for the Milwaukee Braves for thirteen years and served as an agent for Hank Aaron and Stan Musial as well as eight other players who makeup baseball's unique "500 Home Run Club." The twelve living members of the club were interviewed as well as some one-hundred eighty teammates and opponents of the sixteen sluggers. The result is a wonderful volume with succinct summaries of each player's career as well as special insights and stories from those who have known these players through the years.

Each chapter sketches the highlights of the players' life in baseball and beyond. Some of the chapters feature a short feature of the player himself commenting on his career and especially his home run hitting. All of the chapters (except the one on Mark McGwire) also have short comments by teammates and opponents about the player. In the Willie Mays chapter there are fifty-seven comments. The result is this fascinating look at the player through the authors' eyes, the player's own eyes, and through the eyes of others. The interviews provide the opportunity for the authors to include quotes and stories often not included in other books or articles about the player.

Fans of these great players will welcome these compact snapshots of the array of great sluggers who-though very different in personalities-are united by their common achievement: they are members of the 500 home run club!
