Career Leaders for Caught Stealing

Stealing in a game is legal, but getting caught could easily cost your team at a chance for scoring. Highly proficient base thieves dominate this list making the old argument about the value of a steal debatable.

Raw speed and the ability to steal a base are needed to appear on Baseball Almanac's chart of the top one-hundred (100) career caught stealing leaders as if you are not attempting the steal, you could not get caught stealing as often as these players have. Note: A bold faced entry denotes that the player was active during the previous Major League season.

"I just think when there is an abundance of (born again) believers brought together, at times there is going to be a war come out of it. I think sometimes Satan attacks those strong with the Lord (replying to a slow start question in 1990)." - Brett Butler (3rd Overall Caught Stealing Leader)

Rickey Henderson is first overall (Major League record) for career caught stealing and holds the American League record with two-hundred ninety-three (293) while Lou Brock holds the National League record with three-hundred seven (307) caught stealing.

In 1922 Max Carey of the Pittsburgh Pirates stole fifty-one (51) bases and got caught stealing only twice making him the Major League record holder for fewest times being caught stealing with 50+ steals.

Did you know that Don Baylor was the first Major League baseball player to be caught stealing (since the stat was recorded) twice during the same inning? It took place on June 15, 1974, during the ninth inning.
