20 Wins Club : 1901 - 1925

Twenty wins in a single season is a truly a magical plateau. Jim Bouton wrote in his classic book Ball Four, "If you had a pill that would guarantee a pitcher twenty wins, but might take five years off his life, he'd take it."

Baseball Almanac is pleased to present the pitchers from 1901 through 1925 who are members of the National League 20 Wins Club. Note: A bold faced entry denotes that the player was active during the previous Major League season. Quantities are cumulative, consecutive and include instances from other major leagues also.

"I owe everything I have to them when I'm out there on the mound. But I owe the fans nothing and they owe me nothing when I am not pitching." - Christy Mathewson

Twenty Wins Club

Did you know that Will White set the National League record for complete games by a twenty (20) game winner in 1879 with seventy-five (75)?

More than one-hundred years later Bill Swift in 1993 pitched only one (1) complete game which is the least tossed by a National League twenty (20) game winner.

In 1916 Grover Alexander tossed sixteen (16) shutouts. Those shutouts tied the National League record for twenty (20) game winners set by George Bradley in 1876.
