Single Season Leaders for Shutouts

Each of the following single season leaders in shutouts stepped onto the rubber and held the other team scoreless. Many of them have even done it several times through extra innings. This feat is fast becoming more and more difficult in modern baseball with the specialization of the pitcher position - middle relief, closer, setup man, etcetera.

Baseball Almanac is pleased to present the top one-hundred (100) all-time single season leaders in Major League shutouts. Note: A bold faced entry denotes that the player was active during the previous Major League season.

"You know, I can't eat tablets or nicely framed awards." - Hall of Fame Pitcher Grover Alexander (Tied for #1 Ranked Single Season Shutouts Leader)

Current Through End of 2007 Regular Season

Did you know that Sandy Koufax won the Cy Young Award after his eleven (11) shutout season in 1963? Did you know that in 2003 the Major League leaders for shutouts were Kevin Millwood of the Atlanta Braves, Matt Morris from the St. Louis Cardinals and Jason Schmidt from the San Francisco Giants, who each tossed three (3)? In 2004 Schmidt was back with three again this time joined by Cory Lidle. In 2005 Dontrelle Willis stood alone notching an impressive five (5).

Walter Johnson, who appears on the single season leaders for shutouts chart five (5) times, and Grover Alexander, who appears on the single season leaders for shutouts chart six (6) times, are the lifetime shutout leaders and dominate the page.

Pitchers enshrined in the National Baseball Hall of Fame dominate the single season leaders for shutouts chart, but there are a few standouts including #2 — George Bradley, who had a rookie season like no other pitcher in Major League history.
