Don Richard Ashburn was a Major League Baseball player with the Philadelphia Phillies (1948-1959), Chicago Cubs (1960-1961), and New York Mets (1962). Did you know that Richie, his nickname, somehow only received 2.1% of the vote by the baseball writers during his first year of eligibility in the 1968 Hall of Fame election (eventually being put in by the Veterans Committee in 1995)? Putt-Putt was a huge piece of the Whiz Kids (nickname given to the 1950 Philadelphia Phillies), retired with a .308 lifetime batting average, was an incredibly talented center fielder (more than fifty first place finishes in fielding stats during his career) and had more than a few notable single season hitting leaderboard appearances:

Richie Ashburn | National Baseball Hall of Fame Plaque | Class of 1985 (HOF)

The Philadelphia Baseball Wall of Fame is a collection of plaques, mounted on a brick wall in the Ashburn Alley section of Citizens Bank Park. From 1978 to 2003, the Phillies inducted one figure from their franchise history and one notable person from the Philadelphia Athletics (A's) organization each year, with the exception of 1983, when the Phillies inducted their Centennial Team. Their Centennial Team commemorates the best players of the first 100 years in franchise history and Ashburn made the team which includes: Richie Ashburn (OF), Bob Boone (C), Larry Bowa (SS), Steve Carlton (LHP), Del Ennis (OF), Dallas Green (MGR), Jim Konstanty (RHP), Garry Maddox (OF), Tug McGraw (LHP), Robin Roberts (RHP), Pete Rose (1B), Mike Schmidt (3B) and Manny Trillo (2B).
