Stan Coveleski Stats by Baseball Almanac |
Stanley Anthony Coveleski, who was born Stanislaus Kowalewski, was a Major League Baseball player who pitched for the Philadelphia Athletics (1912), Cleveland Indians (1916-1924), Washington Senators (1925-1927), and New York Yankees (1928). Did you know that Stan, his nickname, was one-of-nine American League pitchers permitted to throw the spitball after it was banned in 1920?
Did you know that Stan's brother, Harry Coveleski, took the mound for the 1915 Detroit Tigers fifty-times, breaking the team record for most games pitched in a season, set previously by George Mullin, who "only" had 46 appearances with the 1907 Tigers?
Did you know that when Stan Coveleski pitched a 19-inning complete game on May 24, 1918, he set a still-standing Cleveland Indians (Guardians) record for longest complete game thrown by a single pitcher in franchise history? [Original Newspaper Story Below] Do you know whose record he broke? [Answer]
Stan Coveleski 19-Inning Complete Game | The News & Observer | 25 May 1918Baseball Almanac Research Library
Did you know that Stan Coveleski was the first Cleveland Indians pitcher to start forty-or-more games during the same season? His forty-starts in 1921, broke the record set originally by Addie Joss (38 starts in 1907), who was tied by Jim Bagby (Sr.) (38 starts in 1920, then tied again by Coveleski himself in 1920!
Did you know that Stan Coveleski was named one of the 100 Greatest Cleveland Indians Players ever? As part of the club’s 100th Anniversary Celebration, a panel of veteran baseball writers, historians and executives selected a roster of the Top 100 Greatest Indians and Coveleski was named one of the thirty-six pitchers.

Stan Coveleski won twenty-or-more games five times during his career, including four consecutive seasons (1918-1921) with the Indians, a 20-wins pitching feat matched in Cleveland by two other hall of fame twirlers, Addie Joss (1905-1908) and Wes Ferrell (1929-1932), but never surpassed.
When the Indians won their first World Championship (1920 World Series), Stan Coveleski was selected to pitch Game 1 (he threw a complete game, allowing only five hits, and won it 3-1), Game 4 (he threw another complete game, he allowed only five hits again, he won it 5-1) and Game 7 (he threw a third complete game, he allowed only five hits a third time, and this time he shut out the Dodgers, winning it by a score of 3-0!
