"At that point (in the 1957 World Series), we were in imminent danger of going down three games to one, and I don't think anybody in America would have imagined that the guy who would turn the Series around would be Nippy Jones. Nippy was a first baseman who had been out of the big leagues for five years before we brought him up to fill in when Adcock was hurt, and he had never really made his mark - until this day. When he did, the mark was on his shoe." - Hank Aaron in I Had a Hammer: the Hank Aaron Story (Hank Aaron, 1992) |

Did you know that the quote at the top of the page from Hank Aaron is about Nippy getting hit by a pitch during the 1957 World Series? Here is an excerpt from our page about the incident: Umpire Augie Donatelli called Tommy Byrne's first pitch a ball, but the thirty-two year-old reserve infielder argued that he had been struck on the foot. In an effort to prove his point, Jones retrieved the baseball, showed Donatelli a smudge of shoe polish on it and was awarded his base. Felix Mantilla was sent in to run for Jones and scored on a Johnny Logan double off of Bob Grim. With the game tied, 5-5, Eddie Mathews put his team over the top by belting a home run to right for the 7-5 comeback.
You can follow the team links in the chart above to locate common statistics (singles),
