While researcher the September 7, 1911, issue of The Sporting News, historian Robert H. Schaefer found this wonderful anecdote, "Herman Schaefer can always have a job on a team that Jimmy McAleer manages. The Washington manager could not get along without Herman. 'He's been a big help to us this year, both in batting and fielding," says McAleer. 'And then 'Schaef' constantly keeps the team in good humor. 'Whenever I have an all-star team I engage 'Schaef', and before the first game is over 'Schaef' will have assigned more work to himself than any other man on the team has. 'When I got up a team to play against the Athletics last fall after the American League season closed, I included 'Schaef' in the squad. 'In the first game in Philadelphia Cobb did not play. He lost a wheel on his auto coming to Philly, so I had Schaefer in right. 'Of course, the crowd wanted to see Cobb above all others, and they continually asked Schaefer, 'Where's Cobb?' Finally 'Schaef' turned to the mob in the bleachers and yelled: "Cobb? Cobb? Who the hell's Cobb. Ladies and gentlemen, keep you eyes focused on me and you will witness the greatest exhibition ever staged on a ball field Cobb? Why, say, if that guy would see me play he'd burn his uniform.'"
