"For three years I tried to get (Eddie) Cicotte to show me what he did to his shine ball, but that was a secret old Knuck never revealed. He'd start to show me, 'You get some dirt,' he'd explain, 'and rub it in well. Then you rub the ball on your pants leg like this. Then' but that was as far as he ever got. I'd have Birdie Lynn hold balls after he had warmed up Cicotte. I'd study them, and do what I believe Cicotte did. But I'd throw the ball with everything I had and it would be as straight as a string." - Frank Shellenback in The Mount Carmel Item (May 3, 1939, 'Veteran Returns to Majors After Exile', Page Five)

Frank Shellenback Stats by Baseball Almanac |
In 1920, a rule was put into effect by Major League Baseball that outlawed the spitball and other substance-abuse type pitches. A group of pitchers who depended upon the spitball pitchwere officially listed and allowed to continue throwing it for the remainder of their career. Frank Shellenback was not included on the list because he was in the minors at the time and never made it back up to the show, but he did spend the next 19 years (1920–1938), the remainder of his pitching career, throwing the spitball legally in the Pacific Coast League (PCL), winning a record 295 PCL games.
Frank Shellenback stepped off the mound in 1938, and became a scout, a manager in the minor leagues, and a pitching coach for the St. Louis Browns (1939), the Boston Red Sox (1940–1944), the Detroit Tigers (1946–1947), and the New York Giants (1950–1955). The article below shows a brief glimpse of the impact he had on those pitchers:
