"The 2006 Pittsburgh Pirates were the baseball equivalent of Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde. Their transformation between the first half and the second half of the season could not have been more drastic. Prior to the All-Star break, the Pirates were the worst team in the big leagues, a distinction they solidified by being swept in Kansas City during a 13-game June losing streak. Following the Midsummer Classic, the Bucs were a confident young group that playoff-contending teams didn't want to have to face down the stretch, as evidenced by their five straight wins against the Mets and Dodgers in September." - Sportswriter Ed Eagle on MLB.com (10/02/2006) |
