2000 World Series
Game 4

October 25, 2000

Derek Jeter walked into the batter's box to lead off game four and blasted the first pitch from Mets hurler Bobby Jones over the left field wall. The Yankees never lost the lead and Jeter extended his World Series hitting streak to thirteen games as the Bronx Bombers pitched and slugged their way to some World Series revenge.

"I've been known to swing at the first pitch. When you play games like this, you want to score early. I got a good pitch to hit, and I hit it well." - Derek Jeter

The Derek Jeter leadoff home run (which was cheered by Seattle shortstop Alex Rodriguez from the front row) was the eighth in World Series history and the first since Rickey Henderson did it with the Oakland Athletics during the 1989 World Series!

Fast Fact 2 Bobby Jones commented about the pitch to Derek Jeter, "I wasn't expecting him to swing." Jeter, whose quote about the home run swing is at the top of page, also said, "We're playing at Shea Stadium, and even though there are a few Yankee fans here, you want to take the crowd out of the game."

Did you know that the longest World Series hitting streak belongs to New York Yankees outfielder Hank Bauer who hit safely in seventeen consecutive games from 1956 through 1958?
