2000 World Series
Game 5

October 26, 2000

The New York Yankees started the new era much the same way they played during the 1900s - by winning another World Championship. Andy Pettitte of the Yankees faced Al Leiter of the Mets in this, the fifth game of the Subway Series. Going into the ninth inning each team was tied with two runs, but Luis Sojo took the wind from Leiter's sail when he had a two-out RBI single at the top of the ninth inning to edge the Mets and clinch the third consecutive Yankees World Series.

This title (World Series Champion) was the twenty-sixth overall for the New York Yankees - the most of ANY team in professional sports!

The New York Yankees are the third franchise to win four championships during a five year span; however, did you know that the other two were also New York Yankees (1936-1939 & 1949-1953)?

The New York Yankees won the 1999 World Series and 1998 World Series making them the first team since the Oakland Athletics (1972-1974 World Series) to capture three consecutive world championships!
