Bill Dickey (1954) was only the fourth catcher inducted into the National Baseball Hall of Fame, joining Buck Ewing (1939), Roger Bresnahan (1945) and Mickey Cochrane (1947), and just the seventh New York Yankee, joining Babe Ruth (1936), Lou Gehrig (1939), Willie Keeler (1939), Jack Chesbro (1946), Herb Pennock (1948), and Ed Barrow (1953).

Did you know that baseball historian / author Bill James ranked Bill Dickey the seventh greatest catcher in baseball history? James wrote, "Was more or less a platoon player for much of his career. McCarthy never said that he was platooning Dickey, but he did. Dickey joined the Yankees in 1928. For nine years, although he hit .300 almost every year, he was overshadowed by Ruth and Gehrig, teammates, and by Cochrane and Hartnett, who were established as the top catchers in baseball. In 1932 he was suspended for a month after he broke Carl Reynolds' jaw in a fight. He finally broke through in 1936, when he learned to pull the ball down the right field line, and moved into the heart of the Yankee batting order. Joe Gantenbein hit .290 with the Athletics in 1939, then had an off year in 1940 and lost his job. In 1943 he was in uniform, and he happened to run into Bill Dickey outside a hotel, waving for a taxi. 'Don't I know you?' Dickey asked. 'Sure,' said Gantenbein. 'I can't remember your name,' said Dickey. 'But we used to pitch you high and outside.'"

On August 21, 1988, the Yankees inducted Bill Dickey into Monument Park, an open-air museum inside Yankee Stadium. The plaque reads: BILL DICKEY, Uniform Number Retired: 1972, A member of seven World Championship Yankee Teams. Bill is considered the greatest catcher of all-time. He was an exemplary Yankee from 1928-1946.
