"Around the Southern League, they watch Tom Dodd swing a baseball bat and call him Tommy God. Because as a hitter, Tom Dodd is that good. Probably, the best Charlotte has had. Others, like Cal Ripken and Eddie Murray, like Harmon Killebrew and Tony Olivo before them, have gone on to greater glory in the major leagues. But none has hit like Dodd has in his parts of three seasons as a Charlotte O. A few numbers: Last summer, Dodd became the first O's player to drive in 100 runs in a season, setting a club record with 100 in 105 games. This season, he became the second. With more than month to play, he has 106 and a shot at the league mark of 132. In 293 games as an O through Monday's game at Columbus (Ga.) he had 258 RBIs. And through Monday, he had 73 homers, 28 this years. He is three shy of Willie Royster's club-record 31. And Dodd's lifetime Charlotte batting average is .311. Numbers don't tell it all. Watch the way the ball flies off his bat. Dodd's home runs are explosions, like those of Mike Schmidt or Jack Clark. The power appears almost effortless." - Olson, Stan. Charlotte Observer Staff Writer. Master of the Minors. 28 July 1987. Section C. Page 1.

Tom Dodd had "eight cups of coffee" with the Orioles, pinch hitting seven of the eight games, five times for the designated hitter. When he was given his one starting assignment, designated hitter on August 1, 1986, he hit his first-and-only career home run (off Jimmy Key), drove in two runs, scored once, and struck out for the first time in his career, even though it was his fifth game in the majors!

Did you know that the year after playing in the majors (1987), Tom Dodd tore-up the Southern League, taking the field in 136 games for the Charlotte O's, scoring 99 runs, smashing thirty-seven home runs, and collecting 127 RBI? Despite winning the Southern League Most Valuable Player Award, he was never called-up to the majors again.
