Baseball Almanac Top Quote

"As a former major leaguer, (Pete) Donohue was given a lifetime pass to major league parks, but waited 40 years before he used it in an effort to watch a Texas Rangers game. When he presented the pass at Arlington Stadium, Donohue was told it was good for admission to N.L. parks only. He stalked off in a huff and, for the rest of his life, refused to have anything to do with the Rangers, even to the point of not allowing the radio in his home to be tuned to the Texas game broadcasts." - The Sporting News. 11 April 1988. Pete Donohoe spent the first ten years in the majors with the Reds; taking the mound in 316 games, throwing 134 complete games, winning 127 games, shutting down the opposition in 16 games, and finishing in Cincinnati with a 3.73 ERA. Donohoe was inducted into the Cincinnati Reds Hall of Fame in 1964. Their biography includes the following excerpt:

Peter Joseph "Pete" Donohue was a member of the Cincinnati Reds pitching staff during the 1920s -- the most successful and durable staff in Reds history. The "Big Three," Eppa Rixey, Dolf Luque and Donohue, played together from 1922-1929 and combined for an average of 92 starts and 45 wins a season. They accounted for 363 of the Reds' 648 victories. All three were 20-game winners in 1923, and each led the league in wins and shutouts once.

Signed by the Reds out of college in 1921, Donohue moved into the starting rotation and went 18-9 for a league-leading .667 winning percentage. He had the first of his three 20-win seasons in 1923, posting a 21-15 record. In 1925 he was again a 21-game winner, and he led the league with 27 complete games and 301 innings pitched. Donohue led the league in wins with 20 in 1926 and paced the league in innings pitched and shutouts.

Much of Donohue's success rested on the effective use of a changeup -- a pitch that many baseball historians credit him with developing.

Changeup: a slow baseball pitch thrown with the same motion as a fastball, in order to receive the batter. Originally known as the change of pace pitch, Donohue is "generally thought to be the pitcher who perfected the change-up — he used the pitch with the same frequency that most hurlers use their fastball," wrote The Sporting News, on April 11, 1988 (Page 41).
