Baseball Almanac Top Quote

"He's (Dave Elder) more of a fastball guy and he got into the pattern where he threw more sliders, and it kind of got away from him. He got away from what his strengths are. He settled down, started pumping fastballs, and he was a different pitcher after that." - Laker, Tim. Elder struck out side in eighth. Mortiz, Amy. Buffalo News Sports Reporter. 21 June 2002. The Back of the Baseball Card
DAVID ELDER —P. During his four-year tenure in pro ball, David has averaged more strikeouts than innings pitched. One of the top prospects in the Texas organization, the 25-year-old righty doubled as a started and reliever for Double-A Tulsa last summer.

Did you know that when Dave Elder took the mound in his final major league game, on May 11, 2003, he surrendered his third, and final, career home run? That home run, hit by Rafael Palmeiro, put him into the 500 Home Runs Club!

David Elder died on January 31, 2023, in McDonough, Georgia. He was only 47 years old. His obituary (Scot Ward Funeral Services, 5 February 2023) included this wonderful passage, "His backyard moonlighted as the neighborhood wiffle ball field. His talent started there but blossomed into a lifetime career. In 1994, he landed a scholarship to pitch for Georgia Tech. He then was drafted by the Texas Rangers organization and played professionally for several years. He made his first Major League pitching debut with the Cleveland Indians organization against the New York Yankees. The first batter David faced was homerun hitter Jason Giambi. David struck him out. His family loved showing David's face on his own baseball card. After multiple arm and shoulder surgeries, his pitching career stopped, but his love for the game never ended. He became involved in youth baseball as a coach, mentor, and instructor. He coached for many years and found great joy in coaching young players. In 2015, David was inducted as a National Sports Hero for the City of Pensacola, Florida. He spent his lifetime making his family proud."
