Baseball Almanac Top Quote

"Seattle Mariner Edgar Martinez remains baseball's most anonymous star and dares not leave home without his credit card. He is the Billy Williams of his day, a little recognized performer, lost on a team that hasn't had a lot of success, toiling in relative obscurity, putting up big numbers nonetheless." - Bianchine, Jim. Baseball Digest Contributor. Mariners' Edgar Martinez: An Unsung Batting Champion. December 1995 Issue. Page 38.

Edgar Martinez was a Major League Baseball player who spent his entire 18-year Hall of Fame career with the Seattle Mariners (1987-2004). Edgar was born in New York City (New York), but his parents divorced when he was two-years-old, and Martinez was sent to live with his grandparents, Mario Salgado and Manuela Rivera, in Dorado, Puerto Rico. Six years later, he watched Roberto Clemente in the 1971 World Series and said, "After that Series, I went outside my house and I started playing in the backyard. I was hooked on baseball after that!" [Source: Latino Athletes. Friedman, Ian C. Author. Facts on File Publishing. Martinez, Edgar. 1 May 2007. Page 133.]

Did you know that Edgar Martinez, who began his career as a third baseman, won an American League batting title in 1992, hitting an American League leading .343, and became the first Seattle Mariners' batting champion? Did you know that when Papi won his second batting title in 1995, leading the league with a .356 batting average, he was a designated hitter — the first DH in baseball history to ever win a batting title?

Did you know that when Edgar Martinez signed a mid-season contract in 1992, the three-year (1993-1995) $10 million dollar deal with the largest ever given to a player in Mariners history?

Did you know that when Edgar Martinez collected 46 doubles in 1998, he set a new single season Mariners record for doubles, once held by Ken Griffey Jr. (42 doubles in 1991)? Edgar broke his own record in 1995 (52 doubles), tied it again in 1996 (52 doubles), but lost the record that same year. What teammate had 54 doubles in 1996? [Answer]

Did you know that Edgar Martinez had a career slash line of .312/.418/.515 when he retired? Seven previous players (before 2004), with 300-or-more career home runs, in baseball history also had a .300/.400/.500 slash line — Babe Ruth, Jimmie Foxx, Ted Williams, Mel Ott, Lou Gehrig, Stan Musial, and Hank Greenberg.

Did you know that Edgar Martinez had 16 regular season at-bats against Hall of Fame pitcher Mariano Rivera, the greatest closer in Major League history? Why mention this here? Because Martinez' batting average versus Rivera was .625 (10 hits, 3 doubles, 2 home runs, 6 RBIs, and 3 walks)! Mariano once said on MLB Network, "I will put it like this: The only guy that I didn't want to face, when a tough situation comes, was Edgar Martínez. The reason is because I couldn't get him out. I couldn't get him out. It didn't matter how I threw the ball. I couldn't get him out. Oh, my god, he had more than my number. He had my breakfast, lunch and dinner."

When Edgar Martinez hung up his playing cleats in 2004, he had accumulated five Silver Slugger Awards, one at third base (1992) and four as a DH (1995, 1997, 2001, 2003), leaving Gar tied with Hall of Famer Paul Molitor (1987, 1988, 1993, 1996) for most in history by a designated hitter, since passed by David Ortiz (2004, 2005, 2006, 2007, 2011, 2013, 2016).

Edgar Martinez struggled initially on the BBWAA Hall of Fame ballot, far from the 75% threshold needed for induction; 2010 (36.2%), 2011 (32.9%), 2012 (36.5%), 2013 (35.9%), 2014 (25.2%), 2015 (27.0%), but teammate, and 2015 Hall of Famer Randy Johnson, had the following to say about El Papa on ESPN during a 2015 interview:

"I've faced a lot of Hall of Fame hitters, and my gosh, Edgar is the best hitter that I ever saw. I support him because he was my teammate, and I loved him, and he did so much for Seattle and made me look good during my career there. The first person on my ballot who would get my vote is Edgar. Yes, I'm campaigning for him. But isn't that always going to happen with these kinds of things? He was just a great hitter. You know how you love something and you carry it around with you? When I got to Seattle, Edgar was walking around with a bat all the time. The guy's locker was right across the carpet from mine, and I'd look at the top of his locker and he would have his bats lined up and his own scale to weigh the bats. Who does that? I learned all kinds of little tidbits and secrets from him. I know you don't get into the Hall of Fame by being a nice guy. You get in for merit -- and Edgar's merit stands by itself with all he's done. But he's also one of the nicest and most humble guys I've ever met."

The following year, Edgar's vote total nearly doubled, up to 43.4%, followed by 58.6% in 2017, 70.4% in 2018, and in 2019, he was finally (85.4%) sent to Cooperstown.
