Joseph Patrick Mauer was a Major League Baseball player who spent his entire 15-year career with the Minnesota Twins (2004-2018). When Joe, his nickname, took the field on April 5, 2004, he became the second Cretin-Derham Hall High school graduate to reach the majors. Do you know what Hall of Fame player preceded Mauer? [Answer]
SEVEN THINGS YOU SHOULD KNOW ABOUT JOE MAUER
When Joe Mauer won the Player of the Month Award in June 2006, after batting "only" .452, he was one-of-three Twins to sweep Major League Baseball's three monthly awards. Johan Santana (Pitcher of the Month) and Francisco Liriano (Rookie of the Month) captured the other two and it was the first time three players from the same team swept these three baseball awards!
When Joe Mauer won his first batting title in 2006, he became the first catcher to ever lead the American League in batting average. His .347 average was not only highest in the junior circuit, but it was also highest in the the majors that year, making Mauer the first catcher in baseball history to lead the majors in batting average!
When Joe Mauer won his second batting title, in 2008, he tied Ernie Lombardi (Hall of Fame Class of 1986) for most batting championships by a catcher—just one year later (in 2009), Mauer broke that record and became the first and only catcher with three batting titles!
When Joe Mauer hit .365 in 2009, it was a new single season record for highest batting average by a catcher in Major League history. Do you know what Hall of Fame catcher holds the National League record? [Answer]
When Joe Mauer led the American League (AL) in batting average, on-base percentage, and slugging percentage in 2009, he became the first catcher in baseball history to lead his league in all three hitting percentages. Do you know what Hall of Fame third baseman was the last to lead the AL in those same three stats? [Answer]
When Joe Mauer signed an eight-year, $184 million contract extension in March 2010, he became the highest paid catcher in baseball history. It was, at that time, the fourth-largest contract in baseball history, behind Alex Rodriguez's two deals (10-year / $275 million & 10-year / $252 million), and Derek Jeter (10-year / $189 million).
When Joe Mauer retired, the Minnesota Twins honored him by retiring his #7 on June 15, 2019. Twinkies who preceded him were Tom Kelly (#10 in 2012), Bert Blyleven (##28 in 2011), Kirby Puckett (#34 in 1997), Kent Hrbek (#14 in 1995), Tony Oliva (#6 in 1991), Rod Carew (#29 in 1987) and Harmon Killebrew (#3 in 1975).
Did you know that Joe Mauer broke-up three no-hitters in the ninth inning? On May 6, 2008, with two outs in the ninth inning, Mauer doubled off Gavin Floyd ending his no-hitter. On August 23, 2010, with one out in the ninth inning, Mauer singled off Neftali Feliz ending his no-hitter. And, on May 24, 2013, with one out in the ninth inning, Mauer singled off Anibal Sanchez, ending his no-hitter.
The last player to break up three gems in the ninth inning was Horace Clarke, who crushed the dreams of three pitchers in the same exact year, during the span of just a few weeks (Jim Rooker, on June 4, 1970; Sonny Siebert, on June 19, 1970; and Joe Niekro, on July 2, 1970).
The Sporting News, on September 24, 2009, announced their Team of the Decade which was composed of Joe Mauer (catcher), Albert Pujols (first base), Jeff Kent (second base), Derek Jeter (shortstop), Alex Rodriguez (third base), Barry Bonds (outfield), Ichiro Suzuki (outfield), Manny Ramirez (outfield), David Ortiz (designated hitter), Randy Johnson (starting pitcher), Mariano Rivera (closer) and Joe Torre (manager).
