Baseball Almanac Top Quote

"In a way, I'm raring to go. It's an adventure (becoming manager of the 2005 New York Mets). A new chapter in my life and my career. I have to try and temper it a bit because I know once I get into it I'm going to be going full speed. You know me, I'm totally focused in what I do. This is fresh and new and, every once in a while, I get fired up." - Willie Randolph in The Star-Ledger (Don Burke, 12/09/2004)

Did you know that Willie Randolph had the twenty-third highest batting average in 1980 (Top 25), but amongst second baseman, it was the highest in the American League? Little Willie was awarded a Silver Slugger Award, the first ever won by a New York Yankees position player. That same year, which was the first year Silver Sluggers were awarded, the Bronx Bombers also had the award winning designated hitter on their roster. Do you know who it was? [Answer]

Willie Randolph has played more games at second base (1,694 GP at 2B in New York) than any Yankee in team history, including their two Hall of Fame second baseman, Joe Gordon (1,000 GP at 2B in New York) & Tony Lazzeri (1,659 GP at 2B in New York).

Willie Randolph played a total of 2,152 games at second base during his career, fifth most in baseball history when he hung up his cleats, behind four hall of fame second baseman; Eddie Collins (2,650), Joe Morgan (2,527), Nellie Fox (2,295) and Charlie Gehringer (2,206).

In 1938, Frankie Crosetti walked 106 times, the first New York Yankee right-handed hitter walked 100-or-more times in a single season. Forty-two years later, Willie Randolph broke his record, walking to first 119 times, a team record that has yet to be broken through today!
