"Stan Musial, who spent ten seasons playing alongside Slaughter in the Cardinals outfield, proclaimed, 'Enos Slaughter was a tough competitor. He came to play. When he put his uniform on, you knew he was out to beat you.' Musial added, 'He was one of the great hustlers of baseball. He loved baseball. He always ran hard and played hard.'" - Author Robert W. Cohen in The 50 Greatest Players in St. Louis Cardinals History (Taylor Trade Publishing. April 1, 2015. Page 94)

Did you know that Enos Slaughter's "Mad Dash" was selected as the tenth greatest moment in baseball history by The Sporting News? Did you know that when Slaughter made that legendary Mad Dash his elbow was actually broken, courtesy of a beanball he received in Game 5?
Enos Slaughter | The Mad Dash | 1946 World Series (Game 7)
The Mad Dash
In Game 7 of the 1946 World Series, Slaughter, standing on first base with two outs, ran with the pitch during a hit-and-run, making an apparently impossible "Mad Dash" for home (running right past the stop sign he was being given at third base).
Slaughter was the "run" portion, and Harry Walker was the "hit" - a hit he delivered, a hard liner to center field in the eighth inning, that allowed the Mad Dash to begin. Slaughter scored the game-winning run after a delayed relay throw by the Red Sox' Johnny Pesky.
The nine moments that were selected by The Sporting News ahead of his Mad Dash where: 1) The Shot Heard 'Round the World 2) Bill Mazeroski's Home Run 3)Don Larsen's Perfect Game 4) Carlton Fisk Waves It Fair 5) Hank Aaron's 715th Home Run 6) Kirk Gibson's Home Run 7) Mark McGwire Hits No. 62 8) E-3 on Bill Buckner 9) Willie Mays' Catch. [Baseball's 25 Greatest Moments]
The St. Louis Cardinals Hall of Fame Museum was established in 2014, a facility created to honor the history, the players and the personnel from the St. Louis Cardinals. The inaugural class of inductees were: Jim Bottomley, Ken Boyer, Lou Brock, Jack Buck, August A. Busch, Jr., Dizzy Dean, Jim Edmonds, Frankie Frisch, Chick Hafey, Jesse Haines, Whitey Herzog, Rogers Hornsby, Tony La Russa, Marty Marion, Willie McGee, Joe Medwick, Johnny Mize, Stan Musial, Branch Rickey, Red Schoendienst, Mike Shannon, Enos Slaughter, Ozzie Smith, Billy Southworth, and Bruce Sutter.
A year after the Cardinals Hall of Fame opened their doors, historian Robert Cohen published The 50 Greatest Players in St. Louis Cardinals History. Enos Slaughter made the cut, finishing twelfth overall. The first paragraph of this highly recommended book appears below:
An agressive, hardnosed player with a "win-at-all-costs" mentality, Enos "Country" Slaughter spent thirteen years in a St. Louis Cardinals uniform, establishing himself during that time as one of the National League's top outfielders. Featuring a smooth swing that made him a reliable "contact" hitter, Slaughter compiled a batting average in excess of .300 in eight of his thirteen seasons in St. Louis, never batting any lower than .276 or striking out more than fifty-three times during that time. Also a solid outfielder with a strong and accurate throwing arm, Slaughter led all NL right fielders in putouts three times and assists twice. The hustling outfielder's outstanding all-around play helped lead the Cardinals to the world championship in both 1942 and 1946. Slaughter continued his winning ways after he left St. Louis at the conclusion of the 1953 campaign, helping the Yankees capture three American League pennants and two world championships from 1956 to 1958. Slaughter's legacy of winning would have been even greater had he not spent three of his peak seasons serving in the military during World War II.
The eleven Red Bird players ahead of Slaughter were: Stan Musial, Rogers Hornsby, Albert Pujols, Bob Gibson, Lou Brock, Joe Medwick, Dizzy Dean, Frankie Frisch, Ozzie Smith, Jim Bottomley and Johnny Mize. Each of them, and the thirty-eight who finished after Slaughter, have their own highly informative section in the book.
Enos Slaughter was on the hall of fame ballot from 1966 through 1979, receiving between 33.1% of the votes through 68.9% of the votes, but never enough from the baseball writers to be enshrined in Cooperstown. In 1985, the Veteran's Committee inducted Slaughter and Arky Vaughan. The writers inducted Lou Brock and Hoyt Wilhelm.
