Baseball Almanac Top Quote

"I've always been my own person. I think a lot of people don't have the courage to be themselves. That's just the way I am. I was a loner in high school, but I wouldn't change just to fit in with everyone else. People used to compare me all the time to Mark Fidrych, with the way he'd talk to the ball and everything. I used to resent it, because I thought he did it for a show. This spring, someone who knew Mark told me that he was really that way, that it was not an act. That made me respect him a lot, with the way he was and the success he had." - Wendell, Turk. Turk Wendell Is Throwback To Fidrych. The Seattle Time. 29 March 1992.

Who are the 10 MOST SUPERSTITIOUS ATHLETES? Ryan Murphy from Men's Fitness magazine wrote a great piece and included: 10. Michael Jordan, 9. Bjorn Borg, 8. Kevin Rhomberg, 7. Serena Williams, 6. Jason Terry, 5. Wade Boggs, 4. Patrick Roy, 3. Jason Giambi, 2. Lyoto Machida, and 1. Turk Wendell. An excerpt, "To put it bluntly, former New York Mets reliever Turk Wendell was a full-blown maniac when it came to superstition. A shortlist of the right hander's many eccentricities includes always leaping over the baselines when walking to the mound, chewing black licorice while pitching and brushing his teeth between innings. The Massachusetts native would also wear a necklace decorated with the sharp teeth of wild animals he had hunted and killed. Wendell's quirks extended off the field, too. In 2000, the reliever asked that the New York Mets make his contract for $9,999,999.99, in honor of his uniform number of 99."

In The New York Journal of Style and Medicine, Dr. Vasey interviewed Turk Wendell about his Tommy John Surgery and asked him about being superstitious, "Some of your legacy is certainly related to your personality and superstitious-like behavior on the field. What sort of things did you routinely do on or off the field? How and when did that become a part of you as a player?" Wendell replied:

"Being superstitious is something that was a label put on me early in my career because of my "ROUTINE". Each and every successful MLB player has a routine in which they follow each and every day. They may alter that every once in awhile, but for the most part they have one. This is accomplished through success and failure. We has humans are very habitual. When things work we keep doing it that way, when they don't, we stop!

"In high school, I stepped on the foul line when taking the field, I gave up some runs that inning. From that point on I never wanted to step on the foul line again. Bottom line, these things, ROUTINES, put us in a comfort zone. The more comfortable one feels the better he/she will perform in whatever it is they are doing. If you don't shower or brush your teeth when you wake up in the morning, the whole day you don't feel that good. It will affect your day someway, somehow, your performance will suffer. As a MLB player you have to reach the highest level you can each and every day unlike in any other sport with a 162 game schedule and another 30 in Spring Training. You ask any successful MLB player and I assure you he had a routine."

Why did Turk Wendell draw three crosses on the mound before each game? "I pray for three things, and I draw a cross for each one: To play to the best of my ability, (to be) injury free and to win." Why does Turk Wendell wave at the centerfielder before he steps onto the mound? "My buddy back in high school played centerfield, and I used to yell to him to make sure the outfielders were ready and the rest of the team was ready."
