Bernie Williams was born on Friday, October 8, 1948, in Alameda, California. Williams was 21 years old when he broke into the big leagues on September 7, 1970, with the San Francisco Giants. His biographical data, year-by-year hitting stats, fielding stats, pitching stats (where applicable), career totals, uniform numbers, salary data and miscellaneous items-of-interest are presented by Baseball Almanac on this comprehensive Bernie Williams baseball stats page.
"Bernie Williams of the Giants has never been mistaken for comedian Don Knotts, but he did a superb job mimicking the nervous television star here last night. And although his performance didn't win an Emmy nomination, it helped power the Giants past the Los Angeles Dodgers in a 4-3, come-from-behind triumph. Williams, taking a cue from the Dodgers — they've been stumbling around the infield all season long — cracked a two-run pinch home run in the sixth inning to knot the contest 3-3. Then he pulled his Knotts' routine. 'I was so nervous going around the bases, I almost tripped over third base,' laughed Williams following his third homer of the year." - The Times Wire Services. Bernie Isn't Straight Man. The Times (San Mateo, California). 2 August 1972. Page 27.

Bernard Williams was a Major League Baseball player with the San Francisco Giants (1970-1972) and San Diego Padres (1974). Bernie, his nickname, was the third student out of St. Elizabeth High School (Oakland, CA) to play in the majors (after Ernie Fazio & Steve Brye), and the first former Mustang selected in an amateur baseball draft (11th round of the 1966 Baseball Draft by the Giants).

Media Moment: During Spring Training, Daily Independent Journal writer Jack Hanley interviewed the rookie then wrote, "Bernie Williams, a talented rookie outfielder who was a year away last spring but may make the big league team this year, drew a big laugh when he said he was mentally hitting the ball good but pulling everything foul."
Immediately after the San Francisco Giants moved from New York to San Francisco, Daryl Spencer wore #20 two years (1958-1959), the most instances by a player in a San Francisco Giants uniform. Frank Johnson tied Spencer when he wore it with the 1968 and 1969 SF Giants. Bernie Williams wore it the most years (3) in San Francisco — 1970, 1971, 1972 — and his total will never be surpassed as the franchise retired it on June 26, 2010. Do you know for whom it was retired? [Answer]
