Baseball Almanac Top Quote

"He's (Bernie Williams) got a calm about him that I trust, and he's electric at times. To me, he's still a threat. I expect big things from him because he doesn't panic. For me, he's in the upper echelon among switch-hitters all-time." - Torre, Joe. New York Yankees Manager. Switching up is hard to do. Bloom, Barry M. New York Times Staff Writer. 20 April 2005.

Bernabé Williams was a Major League Baseball player with the New York Yankees (1991-2006). Bernie, his nickname, played his entire 16-year career with the Bronx Bombers, representing them in five consecutive All-Star Games (1997, 1998, 1999, 2000, 2001), winning four World Series rings (1996, 1998, 1999, 2000), and four consecutive Gold Gloves (1997-2000)!

Did you know that during the 1998 season, a year where the New York Yankees went 114–48 setting a new American League regular season record for wins (broken in 2001), Bernie Williams became the first player in Major League history to win a batting title, a Gold Glove Award, and a World Series ring in the same year?

On May 24, 2015, the Bronx Bombers permanently retired Bernie Williams' #51. Maybe it was because he is one of only six players to take the field in a Yankees uniform in more than 2,000 games; behind only Derek Jeter (2,747), Mickey Mantle (2,401), Lou Gehrig (2,164), Yogi Berra (2,116) and Babe Ruth (2,084)! Or maybe it was because of Williams' all-time / top ten Yankee rankings in these statistics: Doubles (3rd), Intentional Walks (3rd), Hits (5th), Walks (5th), Runs Scored (6th), Home Runs (7th), RBIs (7th).

Bernie Williams finished his career with 287 home runs — victimizing 218 different pitchers, in 24 different ballparks. A clutch performer, 23 homers tied up the game, and 94 of them put his team ahead in the game! And, he hit a home run batting lefty and righty in the same game eight times, second most in baseball history at the time of his retirement behind only Mickey Mantle!
