Single Season Leaders for Hits

These are the players that are there when you need them — bat in hand, ball in play. The men that have mastered the fine art of hitting and combined it with good health to make a season that few will ever achieve — two-hundred plus hits; however, to even appear in the top twenty you will need more than two-hundred thirty hits.

Baseball Almanac is pleased to present the top one-hundred all-time single season leaders in Major League hits. Note: A bold faced entry denotes that the player was active during the previous Major League season. NOTE: In 1887 Major League Baseball ruled that walks would be added to a player's hits total. This was reversed by a special committee designed for rules then restored by MLB in 1999 (but they do not count as record holders even though their "total" exceeds the actual record holders).

"If a pitcher sees you fiddling with the bat, he'll stall until your arms are tired before you even get a chance to hit." - Hall of Famer Paul Waner (#20 Overall Single Season Leader for Hits)

Current Through 2008 Season

Rogers Hornsby holds the Major League record for most hits in two (2) consecutive seasons with a total of four-hundred eighty-five (485) — an amazing two-hundred thirty-five (255) in 1921 and two-hundred fifty (250) in 1922.

Did you know that in 1995 John Vander Wal of the Colorado Rockies set the National and Major League record for hits in a single season by a pinch-hitter with twenty-eight (28)?

In 2001 Ichiro Suzuki set the American and Major League record for hits in a single season by a rookie when he made contact two-hundred forty-two times. In 2004 he was more seasoned and it showed as he broke George Sisler's eighty-four (84) year-old record setting a new all-time single season record for hits with two-hundred sixty-two (262).
